Irving Layton OC (born March 12, 1912) is a Canadian poet.

Born Israel Pincu Lazarovitch inside a little village in Romania to Jewish parents, his family emigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1913 and they settled in the vibrant Jewish division of that city. Layton smartly pursued his education, within time getting the degree in Agrarian sciences from either MacDonald College in 1939. His avowedly interest was poetry, still. Layton see Tennyson & Shelly from either an early age & pass through the more smashing authors throughout his youth. He travelled throughout Canada doing odd jobs, & inside 1942 joined the army & became an officer at CFB Petawawa.

Layton finally became the teacher, number 1 at the Montreal Jewish High School, so as a political science prof at Sir George Williams University. Layton got turn into the hard socialist patch at university & became active in the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. Because of this activity he was blacklisted and banned from typing a United States for the next two decades.

Layton's activism & poetry experienced processed him an internationally known celebrity per 1950s and he was a fixture in early American television. He travelled widely overseas & became especially popular within South Korea and Italy, and inside 1981 these two nations nominated him for the Nobel Prize for Literature. He did non win, however was honored per nomination. Within 1976 he was mass produced an Officer of the Order of Canada. Layton now sleep inside retirement in Montreal.
